Looking back to 2011 – I am looking forward to 2012. Not in a negative way but really think I have turned a corner in sorting out my business.I have been doing wedding photography properly for just over 3 years now and feel that time has soley been used to work on a portfolio and learn and understand about weddings and how to work within them. A big part of this year has been trying to label actually what we do. Another really big thing has been understanding the need for change in actually doing what I do and changing it to a business. We have put a big effort into the web side of things and did a great course with photographer and SEO coach Kevin Mullins. I went with Barney to see Kevin for a one-to-one day and it really changed how we had to think about the business and what we were doing. One of the most useful days of the year certainly.
In deciding actually what we do he has certainly made us think about the marketing side of the business. I joined twitter as well this year. Twitter has been a great help in opening my eyes to the rest of the wedding industry and work, inspiration and ideas as been a bonus as well. Seeing the rest of the wedding photographers has been really useful to see where we sit in amoungst everyone, what we produce and what everyone else produces has been really useful as well. I have found some amazing photographers this year through twitter a couple of my favorites are below

These photographers remind me to be ambitious and different, and as long as your good and can back up the idea that you do something totally different from everyone else you will be on the right path.
As far as my photography style has changed this year. I think a definate change has gone to more fixed focal lengths in particular the 20mm and the 50mm 1.4 used 95% of the time at 1.4. I am sure I could do a wedding soley on this set up. Perhaps I will in 2012. Another change has been the introduction of the mindset of using my iPhone for bits of the wedding, it is a lovely aesthetic when using hipstamatic and with the introduction of the iPhone4s with the 8MP sensor def think that door will be opening in the following year.
The major change I want to involve for 2012 is shoot and scan more film for sure. I have been working for years on film but I would like to expore certainly large format, medium format and a lot more 35mm in all the work I am doing and have planned. I def think it could be intergrated into a large part of the work we do including weddings, portraits, boudoir and a few new avenues we have planned.
I have included a few of my favorite pictures that were shot over the last year. They arent necessarily the most mainstream but bits and bobs, pics I like and moments accomplished. This year we did some big weddings and some small ones, traveled all over the country. We traveled to Spain and Italy for weddings, I been to India, Japan and Colombia for other work, met some lovely folk, many of which I hope to stay friends with and looking forward to the next year. Thanks for reading this blog this year and hoping for lots of new adventures for 2012.
